If you are looking for somewhere different to take the kids one afternoon you could consider Ostrich Wonderland Showfarm, near Semenyih in Selangor.

It’s really a commercial poultry farm whose core business is to raise exotic birds for meat but, as a sideline, it opens its doors to visitors.

Besides ostriches, they farm guinea-fowl, turkeys, chickens and geese.

Conditions for the birds seem pretty good. They have plenty of space to move around – definitely free range rather than battery. The ostriches are kept in large enclosed pens. I wonder whether the Malaysian climate suits them as their natural habitat is usually a lot more arid. I noticed that some of the ostriches had lost their tail feathers, giving them a plucked and oven-ready look!

Apart from the birds there are plenty of puppies roaming freely and they also have ponies, donkeys, rabbits and a couple of monkeys. The monkeys are chained to their perches, which seems unnecessarily cruel.

Admission is RM10 adult and RM5 for kids which is a bit steep but, for that, the owner shows you around his egg-incubators and explains how to rear ostriches.

You can buy frozen ostrich and guinea fowl meat here and maybe even an ostrich egg but you need to have a giant egg-cup if you want to have it boiled!



Ladang burung unta yang dinamakan Ostrich Wonderland ini telah mula beroperasi sejak tahun 2000. Ladang yang menternak burung unta ini bukan sahaja tertumpu pada burung unta tetapi juga beberapa jenis burung yang lain iaitu ayam dan burung merak.

Pengunjung dapat melihat sendiri perkembangan burung unta yang berlainan umur dan saiz yang diasingkan di dalam kandang yang berbeza. Pengunjung juga boleh memberi makanan kepada burung unta ini dan juga menunggang bagi sesiap yang berani.

Kalau ada antara pengunjung yang nak bawa cenderahati sebagai ole-ole boleh dapatkan telur burung unta yang telah ditetas dan dihiaskan dengan pelbagai corak dengan harga yang berpatutan. Harga tiket untuk seorang dewasa ialah RM8 dan kanak-kanak RM5.

Bukit Broga

Bukit Broga, also known as 'Bukit Lalang' - after the local species of grass that grows abundantly here, is a hill in Semenyih, at 400 meters high and 40 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur on the trunk road to Broga. It can be reached a short distance later after University of Nottingham, where the entrance starts at left from an oil palm estate opposite a rabbit park. Famed for its incredibly panoramic views (especially at dawn) along with easy accessibility on foot, the hill is a popular tourist attraction among locals; the estate owner cashes on the glut of visitors during weekends and public holidays by charging MYR2 per vehicle that parks on his grounds.

From the peak, visitors get a spacious view of the plains, coated by a mixture of rainforest, oil palm plantations, villages and towns, along with distant mountains. At dawn, mist rising from the ground from the warmth of the sun envelops the landscape in a carpet of white, evoking a surreal atmosphere. The hike while steep is relatively easy, taking anywhere between 20 and 45 minutes to reach the highest peak depending on one's fitness level, or photo stops. There are three peaks in total, each one ascends above the other through a clear path fringed by tall grass at each side. From the summit, a proper jungle trail leads through primary rainforest to Gunung Tok Wan (675 meters), a roughly one and a half hour hike on meandering slopes.
