Vultures prey on elderly couple killed in train mishap

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 — Nasty passersby helped themselves to bags of groceries after an elderly couple was knocked down by a train, while returning from shopping yesterday. The vultures grabbed the goods as Md Nor Lian, 70, and Norlah Mat Ani, 65, lay motionless. The couple was taking a shortcut across railway tracks near Jalan Reko to return to their house at Jalan Sek 2/20 Kajang Utama, some 200 metres from the scene. Kajang Police chief ACP Ab Rashid Ab Wahab confirmed both died on the spot in the 12.30pm incident. “The victims sustained serious head and body injuries, and they were dragged for almost three kilometres before falling into a nearby drain,” Ab Rashid said. Rashid said the train driver lodged a police report after realising the two victims were hit. The train was bound for Rawang from Seremban. Seven personnel from the Kajang Fire and Rescue station helped retrieve the bodies, which were later sent to the Kajang Hospital, he said. It is learnt that residents in and around the area often crossed railway tracks to get to Jalan Reko and Kajang Utama. Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad confirmed the accident and said it did not disrupt Komuter services.
