Any BN candidate qualified to contest in Kajang minus old formula - Khairy

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- Umno Youth is of the view that any candidate from Barisan Nasional (BN) is qualified to contest if a by-election is called for in the Kajang state constituency following the resignation of its PKR assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh yesterday.
Its chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the selection of the BN candidate should not be based on the old formula that took into account which component party should be placed to contest according to the constituency.
He said a candidate should be qualified and the best one chosen based on evaluation at the highest level.
"If a candidate from Umno is chosen as the best, then the people should choose that candidate," he told a news conference after chairing the Umno Youth exco meeting 2013-2016 session at the party headquarters, here, today.
Khairy said it was compulsory for the party to contest should a vacancy took place because BN upheld the democratic principal for the party's dignity.
"Leave the rest to the people decide even though we know it is part of the political ploy of opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim," he said.
The Kajang state seat fell vacant after Lee resigned as the elected representative yesterday, having won it with a 6,824-vote majority in the 13th General Election in May last year.
The Election Commission, in a statement today, said a special meeting would be held this Feb 5 to discuss the case of the Kajang state seat in Selangor.
Khairy said the naming of Anwar as the PKR candidate to contest the seat was Pakatan Rakyat's polemic to cover up the state government's weaknesses.
